Looking back on our week-long sailing journey through the South Adriatic on the end of August 2024, it’s hard to capture just how incredible the experience was. Each day brought new destinations, breathtaking views, and moments of peace under the sails. Here’s how it unfolded:
Day 1: Šipan – Serenity at Its Finest
We set sail from Gruž harbor, there was altogether 10 of us onboard and I was the captain .-). With few swimming stops along the route, in the afternoon the vessel arrived at Šipan, a tranquil island in the Elaphiti archipelago. Walking through its quiet streets surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, we felt like we had stepped back in time. The calm waters and golden sunset were the perfect start to our adventure.
Day 2: Mljet – Nature’s Paradise
The next day we had fair westerly winds, called mestral, which we used in our advantige to arrive by sail to Mljet National Park, a haven of natural beauty. Polače, where we anchored, was the gateway to exploring the island’s famous saltwater lakes. We spent the afternoon kayaking and soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings. Visiting the Benedictine monastery on St. Mary’s Island was a highlight, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich history.

Day 3: Korčula and Badija – History Meets Tranquility
Korčula greeted us with its medieval charm, cobblestone streets, and vibrant culture. Known as the birthplace of Marco Polo, the town offered plenty to explore. Later, we sailed to Badija, a peaceful islet home to a centuries-old Franciscan monastery and friendly deer that approached us as we explored.
Day 4: Lastovo – The Starry Island
Lastovo felt like a hidden treasure. Its unspoiled nature and remote location made it the most peaceful stop on our journey. We spent the evening enjoying fresh seafood at a small local konoba, followed by stargazing under one of the clearest skies we’ve ever seen.
Day 5: Saplunara – Mljet’s Hidden Gem
Back on Mljet, we anchored at Saplunara, a secluded bay with sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. This was the ultimate spot for relaxation. We swam, sunbathed, and took in the stunning natural beauty of this lesser-known part of the island.
Day 6: Jakljan – Exploring the Archipelago
On our final full day, we sailed to Jakljan, a peaceful island surrounded by small islets perfect for snorkeling and exploring. The untouched beauty of the area left us in awe, providing the perfect finale to our adventure.
Day 7: Return to Gruž – A Bittersweet Goodbye
As we made our way back to Gruž harbor, there was a mix of emotions. The week had flown by, but we were leaving with unforgettable memories and a newfound love for the Adriatic. We promised ourselves we’d be back for another sailing adventure soon.
